Stitchwork on an Undyed Ground

Worked tone on tone, the embroidery here is read by its relief rather than by its colour: the stems catch light along one side and hold shadow along the other, and that is the whole of the pattern. It is a quieter effect than a contrast thread, and it survives a room changing around it, because there is no second colour to match anything to.
