Farrow & Ball Au Lait No.CB9

Au Lait No.CB9 is a light white from the Farrow & Ball Carte Blanche Collection, with warm orange undertones. It sits in the light band of the Farrow & Ball palette. It reflects a generous amount of light, which makes it a dependable choice for north-facing rooms, hallways and smaller spaces that need to feel open.

Using Au Lait in a scheme

Pointing No.2003 is the white to run with it — it shares the same undertone, so ceilings, cornices and skirtings stay in the same key. Ground it with Hardwick White No.5 on joinery.

Priming and light

Prime bare or previously painted surfaces with Farrow & Ball White & Light Tones Primer & Undercoat. Matching the primer to the depth of Au Lait gives truer colour and usually saves you a topcoat. Under the flat grey light we get for much of the year, pale shades lean cooler than they look on a card. Test the brightest and dullest wall in the room.
